Navy Beans & Ham
1 package of dried navy beans
1 pound of ham torn into pieces
Water (enough to cover beans)
Dash of Liquid Smoke*
Salt and Pepper to taste
In a crock pot add beans and enough water to cover them, soak overnight (no heat). The beans will soak up all of the water.
Turn crock on high heat add ham, liquid smoke, salt & pepper, and 2 cups of water. Leave on high for an hour so that it starts cooking well, then turn to low heat and continue cooking for an additional 6-7 hours or until beans are soft and mushy.

One of my favorites that my Grandmother used to cook! Thanks for the reminder!
This is the best kind of recipe, hearty and rich and just perfect for Autumn…Thanks for sharing! š
My mom will LOVE this. Thanks for sharing! =)
Just like mine – I don’t always use the crockpot but do when I remember I own one.
I add a tiny bit of Tabasco too and sometimes an onion.
Do you cook the beans for 1 hour and then add the other ingredients?
This is one of my favorite of all time meals. I grew up on this with homemade corn bread. I do add about a 1/4 cup of vinegar to mine to give it a zing plus I add onion as well. I also by the ham hock. It is usually cheaper than ham. Thanks bunches for a cozy memory!
Oh, I’ve never tried this before but I need to because Snuggle Bug loves beans! By the way, what’s liquid smoke? Is that a brand name? Where would I find it at the grocery store?
Thanks for participating in my Five Ingredient Friday recipe exchange. I do appreciate it!
Believe it or not, I’ve never made this. I will now!
I love dried beans..but don’t make them often. Rebecca gets them free with wick..so maybe next time I will tell her to get the navy beans..she never eats them anyway ha ha
Carrie, you add everything at once, I cook it on high for an hour just to give it a good start, then I turn it on low heat.
Overwhelmed, Liqud smoke is a smoke flavored seasoning you should be able to find it on the aisle with the BBQ sauce, ketchup, hot sauce etc… I added a picture for you, it does come in different brand names also.
Pardon my ignorance, but what are navy beans? Anyway, sounds delicious, almost like pea and ham soup
Navy beans are simular to northern beans, they are a white bean, very yummy!!
Ah, so that’s what Liquid Smoke looks like. Thanks for posting that picture in response to my question. š
Good site!!!
